Larrel Dean Berg , 79, Minot, founder of Bechtold Paving died January 27, 2026 at Trinity Hospital.
Larrel was born March 18, 1946 in Bismarck, North Dakota to Samuel (Harry) and Alice (Babnick) Berg. He spent the years of his youth between Wilton and Minot. Larrel graduated from Minot High School in 1964 and completed his education at Wahpeton State School of Science.
Larrel served in the North Dakota Army National Guard.
Larrel was united in marriage to Carol Maynard on September 14, 1968 and built their home in Minot. They were blessed with a son, Steven and daughter, Jacqueline.
He began in the road construction industry with a start at Minot Paving. He began Bechtold Paving in Minot in 1976. He owned and operated the business until he retired in 2012 and, subsequently, passed the business to his son Steven and other partners.
Larrel greatly appreciated the friendships and partnerships made during his ownership of Bechtold Paving, which will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.
Larrel served in the community on various boards, including Town and Country Credit Union and the Second Story. He enjoyed time spent in the garden, second only to planning the next fishing trip to Canada or Alaska with family and friends.
Larrel was a man of integrity and had a love for family. He will be remembered for his work ethic and doing things his own way. He will be missed by all who were blessed to share in his life.
Larrel is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol; children, Steven (Stephanie Beauchamp) Berg, Minot, and Jacqueline (David) Flikkema, Belgrade, Montana; grandchildren, Dylon and Harlee Flikkema and Carter and Kelby Berg; brothers Mark (Sunny) Berg, Bismarck, ND and Marty Berg Grand Forks, ND.
Larrel was preceded in death by his parents.
Celebration of Larrel's Life: 1 PM, Monday, February 2, 2026 at Our Redeemers Church, 700 16th Ave. SE., Minot. To view a recording of the service, available February 3rd, access https://www.mtmsales.net/thomas
Visitation: Sunday, February 1, 2026 from 1-3 PM at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, 304 South Main St., Minot.
Coffee and bars will be served after the funeral.
In lieu of plants/flowers, memorials are preferred to the Second Story, 13 1st Ave. SW, Minot.
