Lane Sundsbak, 95, Minot and formerly of Des Lacs, died on Saturday, November 7, 2020 in a Minot assisted living facility.
Lane Bertel was born on August 9, 1925 on the family farm south of Des Lacs, ND to Joachim and Alma (Klungness) Sundsbak. He was raised on the family farm, attended a one room country school and graduated from Des Lacs High School in 1943. While in high school he participated in football, drama, track, band and was a member of the Des Lacs High School basketball team that finished in fourth place at the ND State Tournament. As a young adult he worked on area farms. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 11, 1944, completed Basic Training at Camp Wolters, Texas and served with the 322 nd Infantry of the 81 st Division in the South Pacific. He earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal and after eighteen months overseas he received his honorable discharge on November 23, 1946. He was very honored and proud of his Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. in September 2009.
Lane married Leah Monson on April 7, 1947 at Minot. They made their home in or near Des Lacs for the next sixty-six years and he was employed as a heavy equipment operator until he retired in 1990. I guess you could say he loved the smell of dirt and diesel smoke. Lane and Leah moved to Edgewood Vista - Minot in 2013.
Lane was a member of the Des Lacs United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was especially proud of having served on the Des Lacs City Council and served as city assessor and volunteer fireman. Lane was passionate about sports: participating in amateur basketball and baseball tournaments, teaching and coaching youth basketball, softball and Babe Ruth baseball. In his later years, you could find him at his children's and grandchildren's games trying to help the umpires and referees to no avail. Also, he enjoyed golfing, woodworking (especially clock making), flying radio-controlled model airplanes and taking bus trip tours throughout the U.S.A. He volunteered numerous hours at Des Lacs -Burlington Laker school activities, Hostfest and as the groundskeeper at the church.
Lane's loving family includes his wife of 73 years: Leah; children: Jackie (Gail) Sundsbak of Surrey, Larry "Joe" (Val) Sundsbak of Bismarck, Karen (Tony) Tudahl of Des Lacs and Kelly Sundsbak (Jim Norlin) of Des Lacs; grandchildren: Tracy (Scott), Amy (Brian), Travis (Susan), Chad (Kristi), Sarah, Tyler, Chris (Ashley), Rylan (Abra), Devin and John; great grandchildren: Alexis (Hannes), Madison, Cole, Brianna, Kayla, Kennedy, London, Sydney, Ryan, Jacie, Benjamin, Fallon, Tate, Hanna, Laney, Timber; siblings: Darrell (Delores) Sundsbak of Minot, Bryan (Kathy) Sundsbak of Rapid City, and Roger Sundsbak (Stephanie Fitzgerald) of Velva; sister-in-law: Charlotte Fogel and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lane was preceded in death by his parents, son: Wade Sundsbak, granddaughter: Jennifer Tudahl and great granddaughter: Haley Sundsbak.
