Kathryn (Kathy) Elaine Wickman, 88, passed away in her home on Saturday, April 24 after a courageous four-year battle with cancer surrounded in love by her three daughters who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Kathy was born at home in Esmond, North Dakota, to Jacob and Barbara (Burgard) Wolf, on January 8, 1933.
She attended school in Esmond until her sophomore year when she began attending St. Mary's Academy in Devils Lake, North Dakota. She returned to Esmond to complete her senior year, graduating in 1951. She attended the College of St. Theresa in Winona, Minnesota and the Minneapolis Business College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She lived and worked in Minneapolis for several years before returning to North Dakota in 1957.
She married Frank Wickman on September 22, 1958. Frank died on April 4, 1996.
Kathy worked at Doeksen-Gross Insurance Agency, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Schriock Construction where Frank was a partner.
She was a member of Bread of Life Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Minot Elkettes, a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and Women of the Moose. She was active in bridge circles and enjoyed other card games with friends. The friendships she made through these activities date back several decades.
Kathy was a world traveler, visiting all seven continents. Traveling with family (most often with her sister Janie) and friends, especially on cruises, created incredible memories and stories. Kathy was an excellent cook and baker. For over 60 years, she made a large selection of candy that she would gift to family and friends each Christmas. For those that received these delectable treats in the mail, it was a highlight to receive this package each year. Kathy hosted many holiday dinners at her home, often trying a new dessert from a new recipe she had found. A special project she created with her daughters last year was a cookbook of over 700 recipes with the purpose of serving as a legacy to her future generations.
Kathy, herself, would tell others, especially after receiving her initial and advanced cancer diagnoses, that she was truly blessed to have lived such a long, full, and wonderful life. Her pleasant and upbeat personality was truly a gift to all who knew and loved her. She viewed her last weeks of life as a celebration, always having at least one of her daughters with her 24 hours a day and being able to talk and visit with so many important people in her life. With all she experienced in her 88 years of living, she left a note stating that if anyone ever asked her what she considered her life's greatest achievement, the answer would be easy, her three daughters!
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, Irene Schaan and Janie Frazier, and one brother, James Wolf.
Kathryn is survived by her three daughters, Michelle 'Mikki' (Mark) Kremer, Minot, Tracey (Kevin) Lawson, Minot, ND and Lisa (Jay) Helseth, Apple Valley, MN; grandchildren Paul (Tiffany) Kremer, Michael (Chelsey) Kremer, Matthew (Shanrell) Kremer, Dustin (Kayla) Lawson, Ashley Lawson, and Jayson (Shannon) Helseth; great-grandchildren Mila Kremer, Sakura Kremer, Ethan and Ellie Lawson and Jonah Helseth along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt.
