Joyce Ardell Tryhus, 87, rural Minot, died Sunday, January 21, 2018, in a Minot hospital.
Joyce was born August 23, 1930, in Minot, North Dakota to John and Agnes (Pederson) Nelson. She grew up and received her education in the South Prairie area of Torning Township of Ward County. She spent her teen years assisting her family on the farm and in the home. As a young adult, Joyce gained employment as a housekeeper for area families that included Dr. Kermot.
Joyce was united in marriage to Herman (Bud) Tryhus on May 14, 1949 at the Zion Lutheran Church parsonage in Minot. They spent the beginning of their marriage residing in homes located in Minot and near South Prairie School until in 1965 settling into their home of the last fifty-two years in Freedom Township of Ward County. Joyce worked at Minot Livestock for many years and also was a cook at the Moose Lodge.
Joyce was a member of Fron Lutheran Church and later Saron Lutheran Church, both in rural Minot, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was active in Ladies Aid. She was part of the South Prairie Homemaker's Club and the Women of the Moose Lodge in Minot and was a charter member of the Dakota Territory Air Museum. Joyce was a 4-H leader for many years and also taught classes for Farmer's Union. In her spare time, she enjoyed a good book, doing word-find puzzles, cooking and baking. She was accomplished in quilting and sewing. She also loved playing darts in leagues at the Moose and Eagles clubs and card games with the family. Joyce will be missed by all who shared in her life.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Herman (Bud), rural Minot; children, Judith (Melvin) Karch, Valley City, ND, Cheryl (John) Nilsen, Minot, Kathleen (Dean) Clott, Minot, Rodney Tryhus, Minot, Brian Tryhus (Mary West), Mankato, MN and Neil (Christy) Tryhus, Owatonna, MN; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Tryhus, Bismarck, ND and son-in-law, Alan Moore, Babson Park, FL; 13 grandchildren & 14 1/2 great-grandchildren; brother, Clifford A. (Ana Jo) Nelson, Minot, brother-in-law Clarence Tryhus, Minot, sisters-in-law Darlene Peters, Minot, Ardis (Bob) Markle, Minot, Sandra (Sam) Speerstra, Great Falls, MT, and Linda Krupa, Hemet, CA, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and children, Gail Moore and Lance Tryhus, sisters-in-law, Elinor Allard, Clara Hunter, Marge Tryhus, brothers-in-law, Ross Allard, Harlan Hunter, and Bill Peters, and great-grandson, Hunter Karch.
Celebration of Joyce's Life: 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 26, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Thursday, January 25, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Saron Lutheran Church, Saron Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, or to the Dakota Territory Air Museum.
