John "Gus" David Gustafson, 76, Powers Lake, ND died Monday, June 17, 2019 in a Minot Hospital.

Gus was born November 14, 1942 at Sisseton, SD to Eldon and Glenna (Johnson) Gustafson. He was raised and educated in the rural area of Veblen, SD. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years. After he was honorably discharged, he married Marsha Ann Huggins and had two children, Michelle and Scott. They lived for a time in Long Beach and Arcadia, California and various other locations over the years.

On July 26, 1971, Gus was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He spent many happy hours sharing his faith with others and developed countless friendships along the way. He was a member of the congregation in Powers Lake.

In 1999, Gus found his happy place: Powers Lake, North Dakota. He was well-known in the local community for his friendliness and generosity, always ready and willing to lend his handyman skills to those in need. He enjoyed spending time at the Powers Lake Senior Center and was an avid HAM Radio Operator and enthusiast.

Gus' kindness and good sense of humor never failed him; he was cracking jokes with the nurses and expressing concern for others up to the end, even when he was struggling to speak. He fell asleep in death surrounded by his family on June 17, 2019.

He is survived by his spouse, Marsha who resides in California, daughter, Michelle (Keith) Hennings, of Powers Lake, ND and their children; Trystan, and Tyerra (Rex and daughter Sierra) Morgan; son, Scott Gustafson, of Avinger, TX and his children; Rebekah and Cody; and brother, Jim (Paulette) Gustafson, of Veblen, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Frank Gustafson.

A service was held at the Jehovah's Witnesses Hall in Powers Lake, ND.
