Johannes Van Schoor, 36, Berthold, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in a Minot hospital with his loving family at his side.

Johannes Strauss Van Schoor was born on July 1, 1989 to Johannes and Hesta (Van Zyl) Van Schoor in Calvina, South Africa. He was raised near Vredendal and received his high school diploma from Vredendal High School. After high school, he moved to England where he worked and played rugby.

In 2014, Hannes came to the United States and worked for United Agronomy- Berthold where he operated sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, and obtained his CDL. During this time, he met the love of his life, Lexi Erickson, and they began dating in 2018. On December 26, 2019, he proposed to Lexi, and they were married on August 12, 2020. They made their home in Berthold and he became employed by Magnum LTL in October of 2021. Hannes accepted a position as a truck driver with Wisco in March of 2025. In the midst of everything that was happening Lexi and Hannes found out in August of 2022 they were having twins. On April 16, 2023, they welcomed two healthy baby girls, Emma and Morgan.

Hannes found his greatest joy in time spent with family and friends, fishing, hunting, or cheering on his favorite teams—the South African Springboks and Buffalo Bills. On the water, he proudly claimed the role of “net handler,” insisting he always limited out first, never missing a chance to boast about landing the biggest fish. The same playful spirit carried into hunting stories, where the deer somehow grew larger with every telling of the story.

A natural jokester, Hannes loved making people laugh, especially when it came to teasing his mother-in-law, Tracy—though he had a special place in his heart for her famous lake burgers. He took pride in sharing his South African customs through food, often cooking over an open fire and serving up favorites like bread, braaibroodjies, lamb and biltong. Above all else, Hannes was a devoted and loving husband and father. His daughters were his world, and his favorite place to rest was right beside them. Also, he had a gentle way with animals—so much so that he seemed to connect with every creature he met. Dependable to his core, Hannes was always ready to lend a hand, showing up without hesitation whenever he was needed.

Hannes’ loving family includes his wife: Alexis Van Schoor; daughters: Emma and Morgan; parents: Johannes and Hesta (Van Zyl) Van Schoor; sister: Anna-Marie (Johann) and their children Anabelle and Simon Van Eeden; parents-in-law: Tracy and Scott Erickson; grandparents-in-law: David and Virginia Erickson and Jack Sundsbak; in-laws: Madie Erickson and Cole (Whitni Peck) Erickson and many friends and family.

Hannes was preceded in death by his Grandparents, Gideon Johannes Van Zyl & Anna Willemina Sussana Van Zyl.
