Joanne attended a one room school for a time before graduating from Harrison School in 8 th grade. She later attended Minot Jr. High for 9 th grade and eventually graduated from Minot High School in 1952.

Joanne spent most of her childhood helping out on the family farm until losing her father from cancer while she was in the 10 th grade. After selling, Joanne and Darrell moved to Arizona to enjoy retirement. Darrell later became sick, and the couple eventually moved back home to Velva, where they bought a house along with the Main Street Diner, operating it for 9 years.

Joanne will forever be remembered as a lover of the outdoors. She spent much of her time digging in the dirt planting trees, flowers, and numerous plants in her garden.
