Joan Yvonne Brooks, 78, Summerville, S.C. and formerly of Berthold, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at Medical University of South Carolina.

Joan was born March 16, 1934 at Lonetree, ND, the daughter of Earl and Rose (Mautz) Nappen. She was raised and educated at Lonetree and was united in marriage to Rolla Brooks on July 12, 1953. They made their home in Minot and various places in North Dakota, while Rolla was employed with the Great Northern Railroad. The family settled in Berthold in 1972, where Rolla continued with the Railroad until being transferred to Mandan in 1985. He retired in 1991 and they returned to Berthold. Rolla died in May 3, 2008.

Joan enjoyed reading, scrap-booking, doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, along with playing computer games and watching NASCAR. She loved playing card games and was a seasoned pinochle player. Joan also collected postcards from various places. She was a member of the Berthold Senior Citizens and Zion Lutheran Church of Berthold.

Her loving family includes , eight children, Debbie (Richard) Peterson, Billings, MT, Jeff Brooks, Summerville, SC, Greg (Jenny) Brooks, Summerville, SC, Cindy (Mike) DeBilt, Berthold, Kelly (Mary Lynn) Brooks, Burlington, ND, Melinda Brooks (Wayne), Ridgeville, SC, Monte Brooks, Bismarck, ND and Lisa Brooks, Minot; 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Farley, Sacramento, CA; several nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Rolla, son, Glynis James Brooks, and three brothers, Martin, Gene and Lowell Nappen.

Celebration of life service : Friday, July 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold.
Interment : Friday at 3:00 p.m. in the ND Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation: Friends may sign a memorial register book on Wednesday, July 3rd from 3:00-6:00pm in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold.
