Jean Ofsthun, 82, Minot and formerly of Granville, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 in a Minot nursing home.
Jean Bertha Neuhalfen was born on September 7, 1938 in Minot, ND to Joseph and Bertha (Schmeichel) Neuhalfen. She was raised on a farm near Granville, attended school in Granville and graduated from Granville High School in 1956.
Jean married Duane Ofsthun on March 12, 1959 at Zion Lutheran Church in Minot. They made their home in Minot where she was employed by Ward County for many years and as a tax preparer and clerk at H & R Block for twenty years. Most recently, Jean had resided at 200 13 th Ave. N.E. and Trinity Homes Memory Care Unit.
Jean was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and its women's organization and was a very active member of the Eagles Aerie Auxiliary. Locally, she was President in 1975-76, Mrs. Eagle in 1978, Auxiliary Mother in 1984-85, Sister of the Year in 1998 and was a member of the Ritual Team for many years. On a statewide basis she was Dakota State Mother in 2001-02 and was inducted into the ND Eagles Auxiliary Hall of Fame in 2008. She especially enjoyed bowling, gardening, bird watching, traveling with her husband in their motor home and was an avid reader.
Jean's loving family includes her husband of 61 years: Duane; children: Steven Ofsthun and Gordon (Sheryl) Ofsthun all of Minot; grandson: Drake Ofsthun (Kendra Collins) of Fargo; siblings: Jerry (Marge) Neuhalfen of Burlington, Orville (Mindy) Neuhalfen and Dale Neuhalfen (Bonnie McNeely) all of Granville, Joe Neuhalfen (Barbara Nelson) of Minot and Lila (Ryan) Kaylor of Norwich; in-laws: Shirley Smith, Lucille Ofsthun and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and brothers-in-law: Marlo Ofsthun and Robert Smith.
Celebration of the Life of Jean Ofsthun: Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church - Minot. Due to the pandemic face coverings and social distancing are expected. Also, the service will be livestreamed and can be accessed by using Zion Lutheran Church's YouTube channel at

Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.
Visitation: Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Minot Eagles Aerie Auxiliary.
