Obituary

Janet Washek, 75, rural Sawyer, ND, died Friday, October 12, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Janet was born May 6, 1943 in Vancouver, Washington the daughter of Leo and Hazel (Morey) Flammang. She moved to North Dakota with her family at an early age. She was raised and educated in Minot, where she attended grade school at St. Leo's, graduated from Bishop Ryan High School and furthered her education at Minot State College with a major in education and a minor in music. She was active with Sigma, Sigma, Sigma Sorority there. She received her Masters in Education from Mayville State University.

Janet was united in marriage to Joslyn "Mike" Washek on June 8, 1963 at Little Flower Catholic Church in Minot. She was dedicated to teaching students for over 39 years with Minot Public Schools. She came out of retirement to continue her involvement in education for 10 additional years at Bishop Ryan Catholic School. She received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching in 1992. Her biggest legacy was to the many students whose lives she touched because of her dedication and passion for learning and her belief in education.

Janet was a board member for the Minot Area School Credit Union, the North Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics and assisted with writing the ND Standards for Mathematics. She was a member of the Shiny Ass Bridge Club for 25 years, enjoyed playing Canasta, and painted in oils with her good friend Bev. In addition, she attempted to golf all of the courses in North Dakota with her two close friends Glee and Bonnie. They played 82 of the 106 courses. Janet was a member of St Cecilia's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters.

Her loving family includes : her husband of 55 years, Mike Washek, of Sawyer; children, Mary Hemphill, Sawyer, ND, Donna Newman (Francis Butler), Fargo, ND, Sandra Washek, Bismarck, ND, Liz (Kevin) Hansen, Ryder, ND; grandchildren, Katharyn, Dana, Vernon, Wyatt, Nathan, Hadlie, Lexie and Morgan; 10 great grandchildren; brothers, Bob Flammang of Bloomington, MN, Ken (Dorothy) Flammang of Gainesville, GA, Ray (Cindy) Flammang of Sawyer, ND; sisters, Mary (Mike) Littler of Minot, Kathryn Bush of Issaquah, WA; sisters-in-law, Linda Washek Adams, Judy (Jerry) Koland; brother-in-law, Joel (Carol) Washek; special cousin: Jim (Gloria) Johnson; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Michael Hemphill; grandson, Travis Robinson [Michael Paul], and sisters-in-law, Jan Flammang, Gwen Pierson, brothers-in-law, Gary Washek, Jerry Bush along with Mike's parents, Fred & Thelma Washek.

Mass of Christian Burial : Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.
Vigil Prayer Service : Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.
Visitation: Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot, and from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at St Cecilia's Church in Velva.
Interment: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred to the Bishop Ryan Catholic School Teacher's Endowment Fund or to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
