A Daughter, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and former Marine, Janet Faye Duke, 78, Minot, arrived in heaven on January 18, 2017. She was at home surrounded by her loving family and hospice.
Janet was born on July 8, 1938 in Harvey, North Dakota, the first child of John and Freda (Hahn) Michalenko. She grew up on the family farm outside of Butte, ND and graduated from Butte High School in 1955. She continued her education at Minot Business College, where she received specialized secretarial training, prior to enlisting with the U.S, Marine Corps in 1957. She received an honorable discharge in 1959.
While in the service, Janet met the love of her life, Charles "Chuck" Duke, and they were married on February 14, 1959 in Bethesda, MD. During the next 17 years, five children blessed their union as they made their home at various naval bases during Chuck's service in the U.S. Navy.
The family moved to Minot in 1976, where Janet was employed as a secretary at Schoenwald Realty, the Ward County Highway Department, Porter Brothers and Civil Service with Rivet Mile. In 1993, she became self-employed as a day care provider in her home. Janet was always supportive of her husband's involvement as executive director of Community Action and as a member of the Minot City Council. Janet retired in 2004.
Janet was a member of the Southside Church of the Nazarene, Minot. She especially enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, playing piano along with spending time with her grandchildren.
Janet's loving family includes : her husband of nearly 58 years, Charles "Chuck" Duke; children: Steven Duke of Minot, Scott (Darcy) Duke of Sioux Falls, SD, LaDonna (Blaine) Mosser of Tigard, OR, Stuart (Trish) Duke of Spring, TX and LeAnna (Craig) Heupel of Minot; eleven grandchildren to include: Shawn Duke, Justin Duke, Ashlea Semmens, Brandon Mosser, Brooke Mosser, Brittanie Cadieux, Jessica Duke, Angie Duke, Becca Duke, Braxton Heupel and Brenna Heupel; ten great grandchildren; brother: Darrell (Arlene) Michalenko of Minot; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents and one great granddaughter.
Celebration of life service:
Friday, January 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in First Church of the Nazarene, Minot.
Interment:
Veterans Section of Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation
: Thursday, January 26th from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Southside Church of the Nazarene or Trinity Hospice.
