Obituary

Dr. James (Jim) Brandt, 83, of Minot died Sunday, July 7, 2013 in his home.

Jim\'s life was well spent teaching and helping others. He was born on November 12,1929 in Cleveland, TN to Max and Edrie (Bowen) Brandt of Ryder. As a minister's son, Jim's family lived in the Midwest before he graduated from Willow City High School in 1949. His journey in Minot began at Northwest Bible College where he later taught. He became a licensed minister and graduated with an Associate of Art Degree from Lee College in TN. He worked at Samuelson\'s Shoe Store while attending Minot State College where he received his B. S. degree, then went on to earn a Masters and PhD at Iowa State University. Jim was dedicated to his career as a licensed psychologist. He was a psychology professor, Dean of Students, and head of the Counseling Center at MSU. He spent many hours timing the MSU boys basketball games. He served as a Staff Psychologist at the Medical Arts Clinic, St. Joseph\'s Hospital, and Trinity Hospital. Jim was a consultant for REM of North Dakota Inc, Northern Plains Special Ed, Minne-Tohe Health Clinic in New Town, and Little Shield of Belcourt. Jim taught workshops for the Minot Air Force Base and was known for his humor in the many speeches he gave. One of his favorites was "How to Live Sane in a Crazy, Mixed Up World". He also worked at Unimed and was with Psychiatric Services at Arrowhead Shopping Center for many years. Dr. Brandt was held in high regard by his clients, friends, and family. Jim received the Minot Sertoma Service to Mankind Award in 1981 and served as the President of the American Lung Association of ND from 2001-2003. Other professional organizations included the American Psychological Association, North Dakota Psychological Association, American Association of Counseling and Development, the North Dakota Personnel Association, and the Christian Association for Psychological Studies.

Jim married Roberta Joyce Short on August 18, 1973 in Warren, Michigan. They made their home in Minot. He was a long time member of the Church of God, an avid collector of John Deere tractors, and a University of Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Jim\'s loving family includes his wife, Joyce, of 40 years; son: Dr. Jerel (Lisa) Brandt of Michigan; grandchildren: Samuel, Gabriella, and Isabell; sisters: Darlene Fred, Maxine (Rex) James, both of Minot; brothers: Ted (Sally) Brandt of Cleveland, TN and Ralph (Vernetta) Brandt of Minot, Brother-in-law, John Juhala and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Donna Juhala and brother-in-law: James Fred.

Celebration of the Life of Dr. James (Jim) Brandt will be on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 2:30 in West Minot Church of God - Minot.
Interment will be at Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.
Visitation: Wednesday from 2 to 7 in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot, Sharing of Memories at 7:30pm.
Memorials are preferred to a charity of your choice.
