Irene Darlene Schumaier , 91, Minot, formerly of the Benedict area, died Friday, October 20, 2023 in a Minot hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Irene was born October 24, 1931 to Berthold and Lydia Gottschall on the family farm in McLean County near Coleharbor. She was raised in Malcolm Township and attended country schools in that area.

Irene was united in marriage to Herbert Schumaier on June 14, 1953 at Garrison. They purchased a farm near Benedict where they farmed and raised their 6 children from 1953 until 1985. They moved to Benedict in 1985 where Irene created a beautiful garden for many to enjoy, and then moved to Minot in 1993. Herbert passed away June 28, 2012.

Irene was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Minot where she was very active with the Church. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church while in Benedict where she loved teaching Sunday School and Ladies Aid activities. She was a member of the Benedict American Legion Auxiliary, the Homemaker's Club, Farmer's Union and helped with 4-H and the Resource Center for many years.

Irene enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening and making her famous knoephla soup and kuchen for her family.

Her loving family includes, Pamela (Mark) Klibbe, Windsor, CO, Ken Schumaier, Indio, CA, Cynthia Schumaier, Willmar, MN, Wayne Schumaier, Minot, Jeffrey Schumaier, Indio, CA and Jody (Darrin) Asplin, Dassel, MN; 12 grandchildren; 4 great Grandsons; sister, Agnes Neumann, Springfield, MO; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Grandchildren/Great Grandchildren include Stephanie (Patrick) Keller and son, Andrew, Westminster, CO, Brandon (Laura) West and son, Asher, Charlottesville, VA, Chennettee Jelleberg, Portland, OR, Sam (Kassy Arntson) Jelleberg, Fargo, ND, Jared Schumaier, Minot, ND, Erin Schumaier, Milford, MI, Matthew Schumaier, Santa Monica, CA, Christopher Schumaier, Irvine, CA, Jasper (Rebecca) Asplin and sons Everett and Landyn, Sauk Rapids, MN, Gavin (Kenzie Pedersen) Asplin, Winsted, MN, Dalton (Paige Anderson) Asplin, Mankato, MN, Sanders Asplin, Dassel, MN.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herbert of 59 years, and her brother, Wilbert.

Funeral Service: Monday, October 30, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot.
