Ingeborg "Borgy" Opstad, 103, Minot and formerly of rural Douglas died on Friday, June 12, 2009 in a Minot healthcare center.
Ingeborg was born on May 30, 1906 in Valle, Norway to Daniel and Turid (Viken) Opstad. Her parents and Borgy sailed to the United States in 1907 and settled on a farm near Edinburg, ND. A year later, they moved to a farm near Aneta, ND where she was reared and educated. In 1918, they purchased land for their own farm in Hilton Township of Ward County near Douglas, ND. Borgy worked very hard on that farm until she and her mother moved to Minot in 1956. In Minot, she was a child care provider and housekeeper until her retirement in the 1970s. Borgy also devoted her life to caring for her mother until she passed away in 1979. She had been a resident of ManorCare Healthcare Center since 2002.
Borgy was a member of Christ Lutheran Church - Minot and a former member of the Spring Lake Lutheran Church - rural Douglas. She was a former member of the Spring Lake Ladies Aide and Women of the Moose. She especially enjoyed embroidery, tatting, playing whist, baking lemon pies and lefse. She was proud to have returned to her homeland in Norway on two occasions and once traveled to Hawaii.
Borgy is survived by her sister Thea Otterson of Roswell, NM and a brother Carl Opstad of Fairfax, VA; nieces and nephews: Dean Opstad; Melford, Byron and Gordon Opstad; Sharon Hanson; Sandra McLachlan; Teresa McLachlan; Cheryl Gerjets; Gary and Dennis Auld.
Borgy was preceded in death by her parents, sisters: Signe, Bessie and brothers, Bjorgo and Drang Opstad.
Funeral Service:
Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in Christ Lutheran Church - Minot.
Interment
will be in Spring Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery - rural Douglas.
Visitation:
Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
