Ida was born on September 20, 1923 in Minot to Paul and Guri (Skotte) Pladsen. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Minot. She was reared on a farm in Sundre Township of Ward County southeast of Minot and educated at rural schools in that area. As a young adult she was employed at Trinity Hospital in Minot and in Tacoma WA as a "Rosie the Riveter" during World War II. She returned to North Dakota in 1945.

Ida married Harry Smith on October 5, 1946 at Saron Lutheran Church south of Minot. They made their home on a farm in Willis Township of Ward County from 1946 until 2000 where they raised small grains, cattle and horses and Ida was employed at Sears. Following their retirement from farming they moved to Minot. Harry died on March 21, 2011. Most recently, Ida had resided at Edgewood Vista and Trinity Homes.

Ida was a longtime member of Saron Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Aide. She especially enjoyed embroidery and crocheting. Even though she was busy at keeping the staff in line at Trinity Homes, she always had family and farming on her mind.
