Hugh Patrick Heily, 98, Minot and longtime Mohall, ND area farmer and rancher, died Friday, December 15, 2017, in a Minot nursing care facility.
Hugh was born September 1, 1919, in Hamlet Township of Renville County, near Mohall, ND to Thomas J. and Mary Etta (Connelly) Heily. He was educated in Hamlet Township and was part of the Hamlet High School Class of 1937. He assisted his father with the operation of the family farm.
Hugh was united in marriage to Bernadine Wright from Grano, ND on August 14, 1945 at St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Mohall, ND. They made their home on his family's farmstead in Hamlet Township until 1950 when they purchased their own farm near Mohall. Together, they spent the next 61 years on the farm, where they raised small grains and cattle. Their union was blessed through adoption with three children, Marietta, John and Jim.
They spent nearly 20 winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. They retired in 1989 from farming and moved into Minot in 2011.
Hugh was a member of St. Jerome's Catholic Church of Mohall, Eagles Aerie of Minot and the Mohall Gun Club. He served on the Hamlet Township. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to being a steward of the land, Hugh enjoyed the outdoors through hunting and fishing.
His family includes his loving wife of 72 years, Bernadine, Minot; children, Marietta Van Os, Port Moody, BC, Canada, John Heily, Mohall, ND and James "Jim" (Maureen) Heily, Blue Earth, MN; grandchildren, Tobe Van Os, Leslie Brinkley, Thomas Heily, Rachael Johannes, James Heily Jr., Krystal (Andrew) Svendsen; great-grandchildren, Quade Porkolab, Taylin Porkolab, Tryston Brinkley, Laini mae Ingram and Jasper Heily along with a number of nieces and nephews.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Nathan Heily, sister, Marian Egbert, an infant brother, and brothers, Vince and Thomas Heily Jr.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 22, 2017 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
Vigil Prayer Service: 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 21, 2017 at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Interment: Mohall Community Cemetery, Mohall, ND
Visitation: Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
