Howard Stanford Saterlie, 88, Minot and formerly of Crosby died on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in a Minot hospital.
Howard was born on April 14, 1921 in Crosby, ND to Henry and Thea (Halvorson) Saterlie. He was reared and educated near Crosby and was baptized and confirmed in a Crosby Lutheran Church. As a young adult he assisted his father with the operation of the family's dairy farm.
Howard enlisted in the U.S.Army on December 14, 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota and received his military training at Fort Hood Texas. He served in Company B of the 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe military campaigns that included the D Day Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Howard had received the American Theatre Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal prior to his honorable discharge on December 9, 1945 at Camp McCoy, WI.
Howard returned to the Crosby area where he met and married Jean Simonson on December 31, 1948 in Bowbells, ND. They made their home in Minot for more than fifty years where he was employed as a salesman at various men's clothing stores and car dealerships. Also, he owned and operated Howie's Spraying Service for many years. He retired in 1986. The family had resided at 710 16th Street in Minot for many years prior to moving to Somerset Court in September of 2008.
Howard was a member of Vincent United Methodist Church - Minot and especially enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, baking and singing.
Howard's loving family includes his loving wife of sixty years Jean; daughters: Kathy (Frank) Cabral of Makawao, Hawaii and Jackie (Paul) Priess of Missoula, MT; grandchildren: Bethany and Adrienne Priess as well as Ryan and Lisa Cabral; great grandson: Blaine Cabral and nieces: Kay Mortenson McPhail and Gail Ann Pfrimmer both of Nashville TN and Pauline Ringen Neilson of Kenmare.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Floyd (killed in WWII) and Stanford (killed the week Howard was born) and sisters: Idel Ringen, Mayme Searle, Verna Mortenson and Phyllis Gherke.
Service
: Monday, May 4, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in Vincent United Methodist Church - Minot.
Interment
arrangements are pending.
Visitation
: There will be no reviewal but family and friends may sign a memorial register on Sunday from noon until 5:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials
are preferred to Vincent United Methodist Church.
