Obituary

Hollie "Red" Elivian Ewing, Jr., 90, Minot, died on September 18, 2020, in a Minot Hospital.

Red was born on April 3, 1930, the eighth of nine children born to Hollie Elivian Sr. and Della Mae (Croninger) Ewing in Battle Ground, IN. He was schooled in the Lafayette area, and raised by his large, loving family until 1945 when he, along with his parents, brother CJ, and sister Alice and her family moved to Turtle Lake, ND. He worked in the family butcher shop, on the family's large wheat farms, and played trumpet in the high school band, where he met his life-long friend of more than 75 years, Jim Bergo.

In 1952, he married Miranda Mehrer of Mott, ND. They began their lives together in Turtle Lake, then moved back to Indiana for a time before heading east when Red joined the Army - first stationed in Virginia, then to Rehoboth, MA, where their two daughters, Heidi and Rebecca were born. He developed his love of barbershop singing and flying while living in Rehoboth and enjoyed these hobbies for many decades to come. Red became a barber, sold real estate, and built log homes for several years before moving the family to Vermont where he worked as a building contractor. In the 1980s, he and Miranda moved to Cape Cod where they were caretakers of a beautiful oceanfront property until he felt the call of the wild-west and moved back out to his beloved North Dakota. He continued singing barbershop and flying, living in Garrison, then in the Badlands working on a large ranch before settling in Minot.

Red was never one to be tied down to any one place for too long. His adventurous spirit kept him always on the go! Yet, he loved his family dearly, and was always very supportive of his daughters' interests, helping out in any way he could.

He will be deeply missed by his former wife, Miranda (Mehrer) Ewing, Charlottesville, VA; daughters Heidi Ewing Kneale (Edward), Boerne, TX, and Rebecca Ewing (Paul Ferlan), Charlottesville, VA; two grandchildren, Lee Casey (Ray) and Edward Kneale IV; two great-grandchildren, Harrison and Olivia Casey; and numerous loving nieces and nephews, and of course his best friend, Jim.

He is preceded in death by his parents Hollie Sr. and Della Mae, brothers Lloyd, Cleo, Charles, Leroy (infant), and Cecil J. Ewing; and his sisters, Violet Terry, Alice Evans, and Lucille Carter.

A service will take place later in the Spring or Summer of 2021.
