Hilton Ishmael 'Bud' Sollid, 94, Minot and formerly of rural Velva died Sunday, December 21, 2014 in a Minot nursing home.
Hilton was born on March 15, 1920 in Granville, to Hans and Octavia (Hanson) Sollid. He was reared and educated in Velva, graduated from Velva High School in 1939 and attended Capital Commercial College in Bismarck.
Bud enlisted in the US Navy in 1942. He served as an airplane mechanic at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He received his honorable discharge on June 20, 1946.
Hilton married Caroline Biberdorf on January 25, 1946 in Willow City, ND. They made their home on a farm in North Prairie Township of McHenry County near Velva where they raised small grains. They retired from farming in 1982, but continued to reside on the farm until they moved to Edgewood Vista - Minot in 2006. Caroline died on April 7, 2011. Bud continued to reside at Edgewood Vista until he moved to ManorCare Health Services in February 2014.
Hilton was a member of the Stenkjaer Lutheran Church - Simcoe, serving as president and secretary of the board of directors of the church and sexton of the church cemetery for 25 years. He was a member of the, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Senior Citizens, and a Honorary Life Member of the American Legion, all in Velva. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge in Minot. Also, he served as clerk of the township board of directors for seventeen years and for 15 years on the Verendrye Electric board of directors. Bud also enjoyed painting and woodworking.
Hilton's loving family includes his children: Gary (Masayo) Sollid of Fargo and Carol McMahon of Brooklyn Park, MN; granddaughter: Julie (Bob) Cronin of Crystal, MN; great grandchildren, Zoe, Joseph and Henry; brothers: Harding Sollid, Minot and Norman (Lori) Sollid, Granville; sister-in-law, Verdine Sollid, Moorhead, MN and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hilton was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 65 years Caroline, son, Gene, brothers, Leland and Elmo, son-in-law, Terry McMahon and sister-in-laws, Nadine Sollid and Ann Sollid.
Celebration of the Life of Hilton Sollid: Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Oak Valley Lutheran Church - Velva.
Interment: Stenkjaer Lutheran Church Cemetery - rural Simcoe.
Visitation: Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Stenkjaer Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund.
