Obituary

Herman Marten, 90, Minot, died on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 in a Minot hospital.

Herman Fred Marten was born on August 25, 1924 in Minot to Otto and Anna (Borutta) Marten. He was raised on a farm in Gasman Township of Ward County south of Minot. He attended rural schools and as a young adult he assisted with the operation of the family farm.

Herman enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February of 1944. He honorably served his country aboard the USS Colorado until his discharge in April of 1946. He returned to Minot where he was employed as a custom harvester and on area farms. Herman married Alma Knorr on January 14, 1949. They made their home in Minot. Herman was a loyal employee of the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years as a clerk from 1959 until his retirement in 1986. He was also employed at Minot Lumber and Hardware for 15 years.

Alma died on November 9, 2005. Herman had continued to reside in Minot most recently at Somerset Court.

Herman was a member of Our Redeemer's Church where he served as an usher, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Golden K Kiwanis Club, Eagles Aerie, Moose Lodge and National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) all of Minot.

Herman especially enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, gardening and yard work in his free time.

Herman's loving family includes his children Craig (LaDonna) Marten and Anita (Gary) Groce all of Minot; grandchildren: Jeremy (Christine) Groce, Jason Groce, Tina Lynnes, Lori (Shawn) Woiwode, Daniel (Kysa) Marten and David Marten; great grandchildren: Rachel, Leah and Rose Groce, Danika and Dillon Lynnes, Zarek Woiwode, Conner and Carter Marten; brothers: George (Dianna) Marten of rural Max and Harold (Irene) Marten of Minot; sister: Betty Reynolds of Washington and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother: Gustav Marten.

Celebration of the Life of Herman Marten: Friday, February 6, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in Our Redeemer's Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
