Obituary

Herbert J. Schumaier, 85, Minot, formerly of Benedict, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 in a Minot Hospital.

Herbert was born October11, 1926 in Snow Township of McLean County, the son of Richard and Lydia (Traub) Schumaier. He was raised on the family farm near Garrison and was educated at country schools there. Herbert entered into active duty service with the U.S. Army on October of 1950 and honorably served his country during the Korean Conflict until receiving his honorable discharge in 1952.

Herbert was united in marriage to Irene Gottschall on June 14, 1953 at Garrison. They purchased a farmstead near Benedict, where they farmed from 1953-1985. Herbert also drove bus for the Max Public School District for twenty-four years. In 1985, they moved to Benedict and lived there until 1993 when they semi-retired from farming and moved to Minot.

Herbert was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot. He was a former member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Benedict, where he held a number of offices and taught Sunday school. He served on the Cenex Oil Board in Garrison for 22 years, the Benedict Farmers Elevator Board for 12 years, and the Snake Creek Township Board for 15 years. He had also served on the Benedict City Council and was a past member of the Benedict American Legion.

His loving family includes , wife of fifty-nine years, Irene, children, Pamela (Mark) Klibbe, Denver CO, Kenneth Schumaier, Indio, CA, Cynthia (Robert) Jelleberg, Bottineau, ND, Wayne Schumaier (fianc, Rhonda), Minot, Jeffrey (Sharon) Schumaier, Indio, CA and Jody (Darrin) Asplin Dassel, MN; grandchildren: Stephanie Bean, Capt. Brandon (Laura) West, currently serving in Afghanistan, Chennette & Samuel Jelleberg, Jared Schumaier, Sr. Airman Christina Stauffer, currently serving in Afghanistan, Mark Lorenz, Erin, Matthew & Christopher Schumaier, Jasper, Gavin, Dalton & Sanders Asplin; brother, Emil (Tomiko) Schumaier, Chicago, IL, sisters, Dorothy (Fred) Rath, Turtle Lake, Delores (Tom) Bandy, Montgomery, AL, sister-in-law, Rae Schumaier, Coleharbor, ND along with a number of nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Harold, Maynard, Marvin, Curtis and a sister, Mary Hofer.

Funeral Service: Monday, July 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment : North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan at 3:00pm.

Visitation: Sunday from Noon-5:00 p.m . in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials are preferred to Our Savior Lutheran Church Youth Ministry.
