Obituary

H erbert John Schadler, 94, Omaha, NE, and formerly of Minot, Tolley and New Town, died Thursday, February 2, 2012, at an Omaha nursing home.

Herb was born on March 19, 1917, in Eureka, SD, to John and Barbara (Mutschler) Schadler. He was raised in Goodrich, ND, and Java, SD, and graduated from high school in 1935. He continued his education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He taught at rural schools as well as in McClusky and Big Stone City, SD, for five years before entering into the U.S. Army Air Force on June 5, 1942, where he taught B-17 Bomber Maintenance. He received his honorable discharge on December 6, 1945.

Herb married Minerva Schammel on December 24, 1942 in Hobbs, NM. They made their home in New Mexico and in Tolley, where he owned and operated a grocery store and served as the postmaster. Minerva died on February 2, 1963.

Herb married Mellicent Helstedt on June 21, 1966 in Minot. They made their home in Tolley before moving to New Town in 1973 where he served as postmaster for several years. Herb retired in 1982 and they moved to Minot in 1988. Mellicent died on August 22, 1988.

Herb was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, Golden K Kiwanis Club, and the American Legion Post #26 all in Minot.

His loving family includes a daughter, Pamela (Edward) Willett, Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Eric, Oak Harbor, WA, Adam and Lyndsy Willett both of Omaha; Great Grandchild, Caden Willett; sister, Viola (Gerhardt) Fiedler, Java, SD and nieces Judy Schanible, Rapid City, SD and Carol Bieber, Bismarck, ND.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, wives, Minerva and Mellicent and son, Steve Schadler.

Funeral service: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Thomas Family Funeral Home Chapel, Minot, ND

Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND

There will be no reviewal, however family and friends are invited to sign the memorial register book on Friday, April 27, 2012, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home.
