Helga Dreyer, 94, St. Paul, MN formerly of Minot, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, December 20, 2008, in Fairview Hospital in a suburb of St. Paul, MN.
Helga was born to Norwegian immigrants, Christ and Louise Melby, in a soddie near Keen, North Dakota in 1914. She was the second of four children. She was raised on a farm near New Town, North Dakota and rode a horse to school.
In the 1930's, after finishing high school, she boarded in Minot while attending Minot State Teacher's College. After finishing two years of college, he took time off from school to teach. She alternated working as a teacher and attending school until she was able to complete her Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1940.
She married Edmond Dreyer, who was in the Navy during World War II. After Edmond finished his service, they settled in Minot where they became members of Zion Lutheran Church. They raised three children: Leland and twin girls, Corene and Dorene.
Helga returned to teaching in 1957, teaching sixth, and then fourth grade at Nedrose Elementary. Edmond passed away in 1978. Helga continued teaching for a couple more years before retiring.
In 2002, Helga sold her house on north hill in Minot and moved to Chisago City, Minnesota (near the Twin Cities) in order to be closer to her children.
Surviving family includes: Son: Leland (Sharon) Dreyer; Daughters: Dorene (Jack) Peterson, and Corene Owen; Grandchildren: Brett, Brian (Amanda) Dreyer, Troy Dreyer, Heidi Peterson (Rich Martin), Steve Peterson and Brock Owen; Sister: Edith Rohde; Sister-in-Law: Helga Garrison; Brother-in-law: Stanley (Evelyn) Dreyer and other relatives and friends.
Helga was preceded in death by beloved husband, Edmond, sister, Ann Flynn and brother, Norman Melby.
Funeral service
: Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment:
Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation
will be held one hour prior to the start of the funeral service at the church.
