Helen L. Mackey,
88, Minot, died Monday, January 08, 2018, in her home.
Helen was born January 30, 1929, in Starkweather, ND to Peder and Kristina (Fluge) Berg. She received her elementary education in a country school setting in Ramsey County. Helen graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1947. She completed the Trinity Nursing Program in 1951.
Helen was united in marriage to LeRoy 'Buster' Mackey on October 16, 1953 in Devils Lake, ND. They made their home in Devils Lake, while she worked in the community hospital as a registered nurse until 1962, when they moved to Greeley, CO for a year. They returned to Minot in 1963. Helen continued in the nursing profession with Trinity Hospital for the next 31 years, retiring in 1994.
Helen enjoyed the warmer climate of Mesa, AZ during the winter months as well as the beauty of Lake Metigoshe for more than thirty years. Leroy died June 16, 2010.
Helen was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Minot, where she volunteered for many years. She also carried memberships during her life to the Sons of Norway and Trinity Hospital, performing numerous volunteer hours to the community. Helen was a member of ABWA both in Minot and Devils Lake. She was a past member of the American Nurses' Association, Mouse River District Nurses' Association and the American Operating Room Nurses Association.
Helen enjoyed golfing and taking the time to exercise, which often included going on walks. She loved to travel, found joy in reading a good book but always had the time to volunteer for someone in need. She will be missed by all who shared in her life.
Helen's surviving family includes her son, Jimmy (Lois) Mackey, Minot, ND and daughter, Becky (Jeffrey) Johnson Col. USAF (Ret.)), Warner Robins, GA; grandchildren, Brandon Mackey, Matthew (Courtney) Mackey, Jacqueline (Josh) Harnevious and 1st Lt USAF Jacob Johnson; great-granddaughter, Hannah Mackey; siblings, Alton (Edell) Berg, Peoria, IL, John (Pam Bratsch) Berg, Minneapolis, MN and Richard Berg, Ordway, CO; sister-in-law, Beth Berg, Devils Lake, ND and brother-in-law, Robert Ness, Devils Lake, ND along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, LeRoy; sisters, Bernice Ness and Margaret (Kermit) Berg and brothers, Donald (Lepha) Berg, Selmer (Donalda) Berg and Gordon Berg.
Celebration of Life Service: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church in Minot.
Interment: Devils Lake Cemetery, Devils Lake, ND at a time to be determined in the spring of 2018.
Visitation: Tuesday, January 16, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to Christ Lutheran Church or to Gol Stave Church Heritage Park, all of Minot.
