Hattie was born July 1, 1932 in Gadsden, Alabama to George and Nora (Jones) Phillips. She called Alabama her home as a child and graduated from Linden High School in 1951.

Bea was once united in marriage to Cedric Ballard. As a military spouse she moved with her growing family throughout the US and abroad. Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Japan, and Arkansas were called home until settling in the 'Magic City' of Minot, ND in 1964.

Bea found employment in the Civil Service at the Minot AFB for a little more than a decade. She also worked at the Econo Truck Stop and Minot Vocational Workshop from 1988 until 1993. Bea made many friends while working as a waitress in Minot.

Bea was united in marriage to James Shaw on September 9, 1973 in Las Vegas, NV. He passed away in 1985.

Bea was a former member of the Providence Baptist Church in Gallion, Alabama and current member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Minot. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Venus Chapter #14 of Minot and was active in the Matron's Club within the organization. Bea maintained a membership with the Society of American Magicians for many years.

She enjoyed spending time in the garden especially when tending to her flowers. She loved to crochet, was a master seamstress, and could often be found with a good book. Bea will also be missed for her devotion to helping family and friends through good and bad times.

Bea is survived by her children Debby (Tim) Schumacher, Bismarck, ND, Wanda (Robert) Weldon, Minot, ND, Donald (Rita) Shaw and Philip 'Craig' Shaw, both of Minot, ND; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; siblings Louise Ford and Thomas Phillips, both of Alabama along with numerous nieces and nephews.
