Harvey R. Schmeichel, 94, Minot, and formerly of the Douglas area, died Saturday, August 18, 2007 in a Minot Nursing Home.
Harvey was born March 16, 1913 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Edward and Pauline (Wagnett) Schmeichel. He moved with his family at an early age to a farm in Rosemont Township of Mc Lean County, near Douglas, North Dakota, where they farmed. He attended rural schools in that area and then worked as a farm laborer for area farmers for several years.
Harvey was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Neuhalfen on April 2, 1937 in Minot. He was part owner in a coal mine near Sawyer, with his brother-in-law, Joe Neuhalfen, and also farmed for several years in the Sawyer area. They moved to Minot in 1942, where Harvey began employment with the Great Northern Railway as a brakeman and later as conductor with Burlington Northern. He retired in 1977.
Harvey was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, lifetime member of the Minot Moose Lodge, United Transportation Union, Burlington Northern Veteran's Association, and Minot Eagles Aerie. He and his wife had also been active with the Senior Citizens League.
His loving family includes: his wife of 70 years, Betty; Children: Willis (Charlene) Schmeichel, Renton, WA, Leona (Marshall) Stearns, Trotwood, OH, Marlene (Leo) Wolf, Towner and Sharon Engwis, Auburn, WA; Eleven Grandchildren; Twenty-One Great-Grandchildren; Brother: Edwin Schmeichel, Minot; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gust, Clarence, and Leo and sister, Bertha; a son-in-law, Kenneth Engwis.

: Friday, August 24, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot;
Burial:
Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot;
Visitation
: Thursday, August 23, 2007 from 2:00-7:00pm in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Zion Building Fund or Senior Citizens League.
