Harold was born on April 7, 1925 in Rugby, ND to Carl and Olava (Gronli) Brandt. He was raised on the family farm prior to his mother's death when he was a baby. Following her death, he was raised by Ed and Helen Larson near Berwick, ND. As a young adult he was employed by area farmers prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theatre prior to his honorable discharge. He returned to the Rugby area where he was employed by area farmers and the Great Northern Railroad in the Granville area.
