H. Jean Chantland, 84, Minot, died Thursday, February 11, 2016 in a Minot adult foster care home.
Jean was born April 18, 1931, in Darlington, WI to Thomas and Harriet (Perry) Chantland. She was raised in southern Wisconsin until she moved with her family to North Dakota in 1942. She graduated from Lonetree High School in 1948. She continued her education at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and Minot State College, where she earned her teacher's certificate.
Her first teaching experience came in a few rural settings as well as a time in the community of Hoople, ND. Jean returned to school. She went back to Minot State College earning a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and finished her schooling with a Master's Degree from the University of North Dakota in Special Education/Learning Disabilities.
Upon completion of her schooling, Jean gained employment with Minot Public Schools in 1953. Her tenure as an educator would span the next 36 years shaping children's lives in McKinley, Longfellow, Washington, Sunnyside and North Hill Schools. She retired in 1989.
Jean was a member of First Baptist Church, Minot, where she was a beloved Bible Study Teacher and was active in XYZ Senior Group and Child Evangelism Fellowship. She was an active member of the Gamma chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, where she served as president at one time and she was active in the Stonecroft After 5 Club.
Jean's loving family includes her sister, Faith (James) Cutshaw, Clearwater, FL; nieces and nephews, Diana (John) Van Mourick, Hoquiam, WA, Philip Chantland, Garden Grove, CA, Lois (John) Parez, Dumfries, VA, Richard (Janelle) Orth, Madison, WI, James (Joni) Cutshaw, Greenfield, IN, Joseph (Tammy) Cutshaw, Indianapolis, IN, Jean (Gary) Beauschamp, Indianapolis, IN; John (Lynne) Cutshaw, LaCenter, WA, James Chantland, Norfolk, VA, Mary Chantland, MA, and David Chantland, NYand numerous grandnieces and nephews and a number of cousins and a special sister-in-law of her brother Robert, Patricia Dutra.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Donald, Phillip, Robert and Thomas Chantland, sisters, Dorothy Orth and Janice Chantland and two nephews, Tom Orth and Don Chantland and two nieces, Linda Chantland and Sonja Worth.
Funeral Service: 11 am February 17, 2016, at First Baptist Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Tuesday, February 16, from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials are preferred to First Baptist Church, Minot, Moody Bible Institute, Child Evangelism Fellowship or to an organization of the donor's choice.
