Glenn Oren Whitted, 84, Minot and formerly of Logan, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at a Garrison, ND hospital.
Glenn was born on September 12, 1926, in Trinity Hospital, Minot to Reece and Minnie (Tablor) Whitted. He was reared on the Whitted farm near Logan and graduated from Bell Elementary School and Minot High School in 1944. Following his high school graduation he assisted his father in their farming operation in New Prairie Township of Ward County. During this time he also owned and operated the Valley Garage at Sawyer, ND.
He married Mary Kathryn "Mary Kay" Schaefer in St. Leo's Catholic Church - Minot on October 18, 1948. Following their marriage they resided on the famiy farm in New Prairie Township.
Glenn and Mary Kay owned and operated Whitted Construction, Inc. from 1958 until 1979 and Glenn built several roads in Ward County. He worked for the Ward County Soil Conservation Service excavating stock ponds for farmers.
He was a member of the NoDak Race Club and raced car #33. He enjoyed his racing, deer hunting, fishing and politics. He was the chair person for the 5th District Democrats in Minot. He was a member of the Dirt Moving Contractors of ND and the National Contractors Association.
In their retirement years they traveled the US and parts of Canada with their RV and in the winter they stayed in Arizona and California.
He retired from the construction company in 1979 and worked for the Ward County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff. Glenn and Mary Kay moved to Minnewauken, ND and Glenn worked for the Benson County Sheriff's Department as Chief Deputy.
In 1984 he retired and moved back to Minot. They resided in southwest Minot until moving to Lakeside Condominium #3 in northwest Minot.
Glenn was a "people person". If you stopped at his home the first thing he would say, "Mary Kay, make some coffee". He also enjoyed having coffee with a group of his friends at a restaurant in Minot.
He was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church where he was a Minister of Praise and the Golden K Kiwanis Club.
He had been a resident of the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison, ND for the past two years. He received excellent care there. The nurses, aides and spiritual director in the "Sunflower" room made his life pleasant for his last days.
Those who will miss Glenn are: his wife of 62 years, Mary Kay; children, Peggy (David) Beuchler, Sawyer, ND; Susan (Dan) Burton, San Jose, CA; Cyndi (David) Grabow, Oakdale, CA; grandchildren: Wannette (Paul) Cova, Valarie (Steve) Loera, Bruce Burton, Chad (Amanda) Shieve, Kathy Grabow, all of California, Steve (Allison) Beuchler, Fred (Lezlie) Beuchler, both of Minot; great-grandchildren: Savanna Burton, Phillip Grabow, Ashtyn and Garrett Schieve, Paul Dominick and Jessica Kathryn Cova, all of California, Cassidy , Benjamin and Hannah Beuchler, all of Minot.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Eric Schieve, and great-grandson, Paul Anthony Cova.
Mass of Christian Burial : Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
Vigil Prayer Service : Monday, August 29, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at Thomas Family Funeral Home,
Minot, ND.
Interment : Rosehill Memorial Park.
Visitation : Monday, August 29, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
Memorials are preferred to the Benedictine Living Center, Garrison, ND.
