Gladys Darleen Hempler , Minot, died Tuesday March 7, 2023, in her home.
Gladys was born July 30, 1925, in Lamoure County at home on the farm to Frank and Mamie (Guyott) Karas. She grew up and spent her youth in both North and South Dakota. Gladys graduated from Stirum High School in 1944.
Gladys was united in marriage to Donald M. Hempler on March 24, 1945, in Aberdeen SD. They lived in Oakes, Ellendale, Fort Yates, ND, then Rapid City and Eagle Butte, SD, and White Shield and Garrison, ND. Donald passed away February 21, 1995. Gladys worked at the Garrison Nursing Home as a CNA until she retired in 2002.
Gladys was joined in marriage to Howard Trudell on September 12, 2002, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. They lived in Deering, ND, enjoying a loving companionship until Howard's passing in 2008. She moved to Minot later that year.
Gladys and Donald were foster parents for two decades, caring, loving and remembering each and everyone. She spent her life involved in American Legion Auxiliary, Gideon's Auxiliary, Black Water Boosters and Homemakers Club. She volunteered anywhere she could until 2020.
In her free time, she stayed busy making her crocheted hangers, watching her westerns and was often lost in a good book. Many evenings and weekends were spent cheering on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their various sports and events. Grandma Great, as she was known to many, was the best fan in the stands.
She will be remembered for her kind and caring way, her smile and the love she so willingly gave. Baking was often how she showed her love, and she would share with anyone she could, especially Brian and Michelle, her neighbors, who helped in any way they could and became her adopted Grandchildren.
Gladys is survived by her children, Dixie and Rodney Clark, Hermosa, SD, Debbie Hempler, Bismarck, ND and daughter-in-law Leona Hempler, Poca City, OK; 8 grandchildren, Dennis & Christin Hempler, Mayme & Keith Baker, Donna & Michael Posey, Dannielle & Jake Borden, Shannon Kastner, DJ & Ronda Hempler, Bobbie Kastner & Ben Mooney, Tanner Kastner & Whitney Boehm; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; Sister-in-law Shirley Karas, along with numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter Donna, husband Donald, husband Howard, son Dennis, brothers Lester and Harvey Karas, half-sister Shirley Moore, and sister-in-law Ethel Karas.
