Gilbert Jay Underdahl, 78, rural Minot, died on Sunday June 23, 2013 in his home.
Gilbert was born on September 15, 1934 on a farm in Vang Township of Ward County, near Minot, ND to Clarence and Bertha (Dunkel) Underdahl. He was reared on the family farm and attended rural school. He and his family moved to Burt Township of Ward County. Following his education he assisted his family with the operation of the family farm. As a young adult, he was employed as a heavy equipment operator in the construction of the Garrison Dam. Gilbert entered the U.S. Army on February 6, 1957. He served sixteen months in Korea where he specialized in heavy artillery. He was honorably discharged on February 5, 1959 and returned to the family farm in Burt Township. In addition, he continued his employment as heavy equipment operator and was employed by various contractors in several states for over forty years until his retirement in 1995.
Gilbert was a former member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, rural Minot and a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot and Moose Lodge. He especially enjoyed gardening, dancing, training and raising mules and talking on his phone. He had many special friends including Gladys Trudell, Jeff Martin and his round-up buddies. He was especially grateful for his six years of sobriety.
Gilbert's loving family includes his children: Kris Matoon, Riverdale, ND, Tammy (Mark) Kubishta, Yakima, WA and Jay Underdahl of Minot; sister: Helen (Ed) Hummel, Garrison, ND; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters: Fern Britton and Una Sayler and great grandson: Jason Mattoon.
Celebration of the Life of Gilbert Underdahl: Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot
Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.
Visitation: Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred.
