Gilbert Hamilton Fargo, 93, Minot died on Monday, February 1, 2010 in a Minot nursing home.
Gil was born on January 10, 1917 in Crookston, Minnesota to Leslie and Pearl (Horton) Fargo. He was reared on a farm near Crookston and graduated from Crookston High School in 1935. In addition to attending high school, Gil took advanced courses at the Crookston Agricultural College. Gil moved to Minot in 1938 to accept a job with Bridgeman Creamery. He was employed there until 1952 except for the time he spent in the Army Air Forces from 1942 until 1946. He was a member of the Structures Branch of the USAF and taught the physical properties of the B-25 and B-26 airplanes, specializing in the physical parts of the planes including the wing flaps and cable. He was stationed at Sheppard's Field in Wichita Falls TX as well as in Amarillo TX and at a Boeing plant in Seattle.
Gil married Eleanor Anderson on June 29, 1943 at a Methodist Church in Wichita Falls TX. Following his honorable discharge they returned to Minot where he continued with Bridgeman Creamery. Gil established Fargo Refrigeration in 1952 and operated that business until his retirement in 2008. Eleanor died on August 13, 2007.
Gil was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church - Minot where he served as an elder, usher, trustee for nine years and Sunday school teacher for 10 years. He was a charter member of the Souris Valley Refrigeration Service Engineers Society and a member of the Minot American Legion Post #26, since 1946. He especially enjoyed ice fishing, growing roses, pistol shooting (while there he was the top-ranked marksman at Sheppard's Field with only one eye), classical music and doing things for others. He was well known for delivering roses, cookies and Canadian bacon to special people in his life.
Gil is survived by his brother Vernon Fargo of Brainerd, MN; brother-in-law: Dave Anderson of Minot and several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as a special friend Mike Berg of Minot.
Gil was preceded in death by his parents, wife and sisters: Florence Peterson, Orpha "Spud" Ilstrup and Viola Johnson.
Funeral Service:
Monday, February 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in First Presbyterian Church - Minot.
Interment
will be in the Bowbells Community Cemetery in the Spring.
Visitation:
Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials
are preferred to the First Presbyterian Church "Nifty 50" church repair fund.
