Geraldeen Glee Rude, 77, Minot, died on Friday, June 21, 2013 in her home
surrounded by her loving family.
Geraldeen was born on March 17, 1936 in Drake, ND to Art and Gladys (Johnson)
Haga. She was Baptized on April 12, 1936 and Confirmed on August 26, 1951 by
Pastor Bertil Hult at the Bergen Lutheran Church. She grew up in Bergen, and
graduated from Bergen High School on May 27, 1954. She continued her education at
Minot State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary
education on June 2, 1967.
Gerry was a caring, loving wife, mother, and friend whose life revolved around helping
others. She was a vibrant, adventurous, positive woman who enjoyed traveling the
world and seeking new experiences.
When she retired from teaching she became an accomplished quilter which she enjoyed
immensely.
Geraldeen married Virgil Rude from Bottineau, ND on August 18, 1957 at Oak Valley
Lutheran Church in Velva, ND. They made their home in Minot where she was
employed by the Minot Public School System for 35 years as an elementary school
teacher at Lincoln Elementary School. In addition, she taught for one year each at
Bergen Rural School, Mohall and Ray. Geraldeen was accorded the Minot and North
Dakota Teacher of the Year awards, was invited to the White House to celebrate the
signing of the Education Bill and participated in the National Space Camp in Huntsville
AL all in 1993. She graduated from the National Geographic Summer Institute in 1991,
coordinated the State Geography Bee for National Geographic from 1993 until 2003,
won the Cram Award (one of only five presented annually in the U.S. A.) from the
National Council of Geography Educators and presented numerous state and national
workshops for teachers. Geraldeen retired from teaching in 1995 but continued her
involvement in the education profession by working for Westat, a national testing
agency.
Geraldeen was a longtime and active member of Augustana Lutheran Church where
she served as President of the Augustana Lutheran Church Women from 1995-1998
and 2008-2009, as a member of the Deborah Circle and ELCA Synod Council from
2001 - 2003. She was a member of the ND Geography Alliance, International Visitors
Council, Delta Kappa Gamma, ND Retired Teachers Association, Sons of Norway and
Lewis and Clark Foundation. She received the God, Home and Country Award on May
29, 1953 and served as a National Park Volunteer for the Trails and Rails Program from
2000-2009 and as a volunteer at Medora from 2005-2011.
Geraldeens loving family includes; husband of 55 years,Virgil, daughter, Rhonda Rude
of Chicago, sister, Janice Swedberg of Fergus Falls, MN and many nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Geraldeen was preceded in death by her parents (Arthur on February 9, 1989 and
Gladys on July 30, 2005) and brother, Arthur Haga Jr. on January 9, 2002.
Celebration of the Life of Geraldeen Rude: Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in
Bread of Life Lutheran Church - Minot.
Graveside Service: Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery near
Lake Metigoshe.
Visitation: Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home -
Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Metigoshe Ministry or donors choice.
