Garnet Ida Preabt, 96, Minot, formerly of Glenburn, died on Friday, December 20, 2013 in a Minot hospital.
Garnet was born on September 26, 1917 in Armour, South Dakota to Charles and Laura (Krumery) Seideman. She was reared on a farm and attended country school near there. As a teenager she was employed by neighbors in their homes and by the National Youth Association at Lake Andes, SD during the 1930's. As a young adult she moved to Mandan to live with her sister Gladys.
Garnet married Ernest Preabt on March 12, 1941 in Mandan, ND. They made their home on a farm near Glenburn from 1945 until 1974. She and Ernest moved to Minot in 1974 and resided at 605 5th St. S.E. for many years and she was employed in the Housekeeping Department at St. Joseph's Hospital. Ernest died on November 20, 2002.
Garnet's special interests included crafts, gardening, puzzles, reading, cooking and baking, especially bread, playing solitaire, watching the wild turkeys and deer outside her window and taking walks with Ernest.
Garnet was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenburn where she taught Sunday School and Bible School and was active in the ladies organization. Currently, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Minot where she was active in the Martha Circle. She was the longtime secretary of the North Dakota Association For The Blind- Minot Chapter, former member of the Ensign Homemakers group and volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Garnet's loving family includes her children: Janice Hines of Minot, Duane (Donna) Preabt of Grand Forks and John Preabt of Minot; grandchildren: Shawn (Iva) Preabt, Tim (Linda) Preabt, Melvin Hines Jr. and Laura Garnet; step granddaughter: Cheryl (Lynn) Misialek; great grandchildren: Haylee Preabt, Rylan, Sierra and Molly Preabt and Kallista and Preston Garnet; step great grandchildren: Kyle, Kelsey, Kody and Kourtney; sister: Myrtle (Ludvig) Bachmeier of Minot; in-laws: Dorothy Preabt of Bismarck and Carolina Seideman of Staples MN.
Garnet was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ernest, son: Jerry, brothers: Glen, Ralph, Roy and Gordon and sisters: Gladys Goehring, Ophelia Ehlers and Anna Mae Taylor.
Celebration of the Life of Garnet Preabt: Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.
Visitation: Friday, December 27, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, the North Dakota Association for the Blind- Minot Chapter or the USS North Dakota Navy Submarine Fund.
