Obituary

Gar Len Kenny, 85, 515 9th Ave. N.E. - Minot and formerly of the Butte area died on Thursday September 7, 2006 in his home.

Garfield Leonard Kankovsky was born on September 10, 1920 on a farm near Butte, ND to Egnat and Lily (Lukovski) Kankovsky. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Butte High School. As a young adult he attended Naval Training School at the University of Wisconsin where he received specialized training as a radio operator. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radio operator aboard a submarine surveillance plane in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Following his honorable discharge he farmed, attended college and was employed as a depot agent/telegrapher by the Soo Line Railroad.

Gar married Laura Adams on March 8, 1959 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minot. They made their home in Riverdale, Donnybrook, Bismarck, Underwood and Minot where he was employed by the Soo Line Railroad as a telegrapher. In addition, he had farming interests in the Butte and Sawyer areas. Following his retirement the family moved to Ocala, Florida before they returned to Minot in 1972 where he was employed at M & H Gas Station. He attended color television repair school in Chicago and Minneapolis from 1974 until 1976 and became self-employed as a television repairman in the Minot area.

Gar was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Minot and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church - Bismarck and Minot American Legion Post #26. His hobbies included fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years Laura; son: Rodney Kenny of Minot, Grandchildren: Ariel and Ian Kenny; brother: Phillip (Lois) Kankovsky of Minot; sisters: Lydia Shaparenko of Minot, Agnes Lester of Los Angeles and Ella Krelich of Oakland CA as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gar was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Lena Nachatilo, Mabel Uhart and Stacy Estep and brothers: John, Steve and William Kankovsky.

Funeral Service: Monday, September 11, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. in St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Minot.
Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.
Visitation: Sunday from Noon until 5:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials are preferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
