Obituary

Fred Maercklein , 92, Minot died on Saturday, November 28, 2020 in a Minot nursing home.

Frederick William was born on September 22, 1928 in Ashley, ND to William and Fayette (Collins) Maercklein. He was raised there and in Minot where the family moved in 1932. Fred was educated in Minot, graduated from Minot High School in 1946 and attended Minot State College. He entered the U.S. Army on October 4, 1946 at Fort Snelling, MN and served in Korea with Company D of the 6 th Medical Battalion prior to his honorable discharge as a Corporal on August 7, 1948 at Camp Stoneman, CA. Fred had received the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal - Japan during his military service.

Fred married Donna Gerard on September 4, 1949 in Minot. They made their home in Minot prior to Fred's reenlistment with the Medical Corps on September 4, 1950 at Camp McCoy, WI.  He received his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army Hospital at Camp McCoy as a Sergeant on September 1, 1951. Following his time with the Medical Corps he returned to Minot, continued his college education before entering into business with his father in 1952. Then, he became self-employed as a farm insurance/real estate agent, income tax preparer and farm management services provider. Also, he was the Ward County Administrator for 25 years.

Following his retirement, Fred enjoyed spending the winter months in San Diego, CA for fifteen years. Donna died on November 12, 2018.

Fred was an attendee of Our Redeemer's Church and was a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion and Minot Curling Club. He especially enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, golfing, bowling and curling.

Fred's loving family includes his children: Cheryl Galan and Tamara Tello both of Tucson AZ,  Karen Trench of Wisconsin Rapids WI and Dr. Mark (Julie) Maercklein of Minot; ten grandchildren to include: Elisheva and Jacob Galan;  Nicholas Tello and Sarah Burns; Joshua (Rori) Trench, Ali (Tyson) Arzt, and Paige Trench; April (Brock) Lynne, Ashley (Blake) Eggl, and Austin Maercklein. two great grandchildren to include: Haylee and Paris; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister: Vivian Juliar and son-in-law: Michael Galan.

Public Visitation: Wednesday, December 2, 2020 from 10 a.m. to noon in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Graveside Service: Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.in Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Minot Junior Golf Association.
