Evelyn June Brandt Johnson, 89, passed peacefully on May 16, 2017 at a Minot Nursing Care Center, with her daughters by her side.
Evelyn was born to Theodore Brandt and Blanche (Owens) Brandt June 6, 1927 on a farm in Bottineau County, northwest of Upham, ND. She lived there until 1931, when the family moved to Macclesfield, NC, where her mother\'s family lived.
The family lived in Roanoke Rapids, NC until World War II started, when her father went to work at the Hampton Roads Shipbuilding Company as a welder and ship builder in Newport News, VA.
Evelyn was starting her junior year in high school, when recruiters came to the school to hire juniors and seniors to do office work in government civil service. Evelyn was trained and worked as a clerk-typist in a large office for the Transportation Corps until the war was over in 1945. Her father worked at the shipyards until after the war ended in 1946. That year she moved with her family back to Upham, ND, where Evelyn resumed her high school education. She graduated in 1948 as salutatorian of her class.
On September 5, 1948, she was married to Wallace Johnson in Towner, ND. In 1949, they moved to Minot, where Wallace was employed by Maytag Electric. In 1958, Evelyn received her standard teaching certificate and went to work as a teacher at Washington Elementary School in Minot. In 1965, she graduated from Minot State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and continued to teach at Washington Elementary School until she retired in May of 1988.
Evelyn volunteered at Trinity Hospital Auxiliary for eleven years and volunteered at her church for seven years as an assistant in the office. Most winters were spent in Texas with some time spent in Maryland. Evelyn and Wallace enjoyed summer days at their cabin on Lake Metigoshe. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends throughout the years. Wallace died March 30, 2014.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, First Lutheran Church and Circle, Minot Retired Teachers, and Golden Oaks PTA.
Evelyn was dedicated to teaching and her students. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Her other interests included gardening, oil and water painting, handiwork, and reading. Evelyn will be greatly missed by her family.
Evelyn's loving family includes, daughters, Linda Reiser of Hagerstown, MD and Brenda Aspaas of Glen Burnie, MD; grandchildren: Laura Reiser, Todd (Cynthia) Reiser, Alyson (Alan) Tamres and Anthony (Danelle) Aspaas; great grandchildren: Tanner Williams, Anneka Aspaas and Davyn Aspaas; sisters, Helen Smith, Halifax, NC, Dorothy Anderson, Minot; brother, Fred (Elaine) Brandt, Upham, ND; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter, Sarah Reiser; brothers, Adrian Brandt and Gerald Brandt.
Celebration of Life service: Monday, May 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot.
Visitation: Sunday, May 21st from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Graveside service : Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Bloomfield Cemetery, Upham, ND.
