Erwin Oscar Hauf, 92, lifelong Max area farmer and resident died Saturday, February 23, 2013 in a Garrison Nursing Home.
Erwin was born January 4, 1921 at Max, North Dakota the son of Christian and Helene (Henschel) Hauf. He was raised on the family farm near Max and educated at country schools in that area. During his younger years, Erwin assisted with the operation of the family farm.
He was united in marriage to Ethel Johnson on June 14, 1947 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Minot. They made their home on a farm in Poplar Township of McLean County for more than 38 years, where they also raised their four children. They retired from farming and moved into Max in 1985.
Erwin was a longtime member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Max and served as an elder of the Church. He was also a member of the Poplar Township Board for several years, served on the Board of directors for the Max rural fire district and was active with the Max Senior Citizens. He helped to organize the first Minot area Ostomy Chapter in 1972. Erwin's hobbies included hunting and fishing.

, wife of sixty-five years, Ethel; children, Timothy Hauf, Kingston, WA, Thomas (Mary) Hauf, Max, ND, David (Dawn) Hauf, South Sioux City, Neb, Melinda (John) Thorson, Bottineau, ND; grandchildren, Ryan (Genevieve) Hauf, Anthony Hauf, Lisa (Jerad) Lemer, Adam Hauf, Chad (April) Hauf & Kyle Thorson; great-grandchildren, Seth & Madyson Kostenko, Carter Lemer, Miranda & Megan Walsh, Natasha Roberts & Braydon Hauf; sisters, Anne Saldin, Thousand Oaks, CA, and Selma Tighe, Brighton, CO; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Erwin was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Ella Whiting and Esther Koebernick, brothers, Otto, Paul and Robert Hauf, and step granddaughter, Stacy Roberts.

Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Max, ND
Interment:
Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
