Elvina Halstengard, 98, Mesa, AZ, formerly of Velva and Minot, died Saturday, October 5, 2013 in the Mesa Hospice Home.
Elvina, daughter of Christ and Dorothy (Weber) Morlang, was born April 30, 1915 on a farm near Max, North Dakota the youngest of 5 children. She was raised by John and Kathryn Morlang and attended grade school near Max. She moved with her step parents to a farm northeast of Voltaire, where she met Oscar Halstengard. They were united in marriage on September 22, 1934 at the Velva Lutheran Church. They lived with his parents, until they purchased a farm in Lebanon Township of McHenry County and began their farming career together.
In 1949, they moved to Velva and in 1959, returned to the farm 4 miles east of Velva. In 1974, they retired and moved to Minot for the summer season and then spent many winter months in Arizona. While living in Velva, Elvina worked as a clerk at the Ace Hardware Store for fifteen years. Along with raising her children, she was active with the Church Ladies aide and tending to her garden. In 2004, Elvina sold her cabin at Strawberry Lake and became a resident of Mesa, AZ. She spent the past three years in an assisted living facility and group home in Mesa. Oscar died December 24, 1989.
Elvina was a former member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva and currently a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. She enjoyed playing bridge, swimming, cooking, and watching her flowers grow. She loved her family dearly.
Her loving family includes , daughters, Deloris (Gerald) Marlin, Gilbert, AZ, Audrey Colvin Mills, Boise, ID, Zona (Robert) Holte, Minot, ND; son, Theodore "Ted" (Peggy) Halstengard, Queen Creek, AZ; daughter in law, Terry Halstengard, Spokane, WA; sister in law, Theodora (Tom) Halstengard, Mesa, AZ; half-sister, Elsie, New York; 17 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Elvina was preceded in death by her parents, step-parents, husband, sons, Donald, Norbert and Alvin; grandsons, Matt Halstengard and Scott Holte; brothers, Henry, John & Christ; sister, Marie Dockter.
Funeral service:
Monday, October 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Interment
: Velva Community Cemetery, Velva.

: Sunday
