Obituary

Elvin Kabanuk, 80, Minot and formerly of Buchanan, died on Friday, March 29, 2019 in his home following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer and with his wife and special niece at his side.

Elvin Larry Kabanuk was born on October 28, 1938 in Minot to John S. and Anna (Kabanuk) Kabanuk. He was raised and educated in Buchanan and graduated from Buchanan High School in 1956. The family returned to Minot when Elvin began attending Minot State Teachers College. Elvin served his country as a member of the National Guard from 1961 until 1967. He was assigned to HQ-CO of the 164th Engineering Battalion. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas for one year when the National Guard was "called-up" by President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Elvin and Louetta Gerrity were married on September 14, 1963 at St. John The Baptist Catholic Mission Church in Trenton, ND by Reverend Chris Walter. They made their home in Minot and were the proud parents of two sons. Elvin started his career with GTA, which eventually merged with Cenex-Harvest States Cooperative, before he finished his career with Land O' Lakes. Elvin specialized in the wholesale seed distribution area of the business spending 42 years with the company, the final 25 years in management. He retired in 2001 and had continued to reside in Minot.

Elvin was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Moose Lodge, American Legion, Sons of Norway, Farmers Union and Golden K Kiwanis Club all in MInot. In honor of his commitment and active involvement in the Golden K Kiwanis Club, Elvin was presented with the "Vantine Life Fellow Award" in 2013.

Elvin especially enjoyed fishing, bowling, hunting and playing pinochle.

Elvin's loving family includes his wife: Louetta Kabanuk of Minot; sons: John (Sheila) Kabanuk of Kernersville, NC and Greg (Pam) Kabanuk of Evansville, WI; grandchildren: Daniel (Brittany) and Jorn; 1 great-grandchild: Lilly; sister: Jean Fassett of Roseville, CA; sister-in-law: Kathy (Paul) Casstrovillo of Boise, ID; a special niece Wanda Sprenger, who remained close making the final journey more peaceful and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elvin was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Arthur Kabanuk, Alice Powell and Frances Welker and in-laws: Mary (Raymond) Volk and Laurie (Harold) Grusing.

Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, April 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Leo The Great Roman Catholic Church in Minot.
Interment with Full Military Honors: Rosehill Memorial Park- Minot.
Visitation: Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Golden K Kiwanis Club, Trinity Hospice, Salvation Army or St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.
