Ellen Haaland Hornberger, 96, Berthold and formerly of Carpio died on Friday, May 22, 2009 in a Minot hospital.

Ellen was born on May 8, 1913 on the family farm near Carpio, ND to Hans and Malena (Haaland) Haaland. She was reared and educated on the farm in Carpio Township of Ward County near Carpio and attended rural schools in that area. She graduated from Carpio High School in 1930 and received her standard teaching certificate from Minot State Teacher's College. She taught at rural schools near Berthold and Carpio for six years prior to marrying Reno Hornberger on March 25, 1939 in Carpio. They made their home on the Hornberger farm in Tolgen Township of Ward County south of Berthold where they raised small grains and livestock. They moved into Berthold in June of 2003. Reno died on November 17, 2003.

Ellen was a member of the Berthold Baptist Church where she served as deaconess, taught Sunday school and served as secretary-treasurer of the Mission Circle. In addition, she was a member of the Berthold Senior Citizens and especially enjoyed family time, reading, crocheting afghans and doilies, baking and cooking.

Ellen's loving family includes her children: Ronald (Beryl) Hornberger of Fremont NE, Wayne (Carol) Hornberger, Harley (Mary) Hornberger and Kenneth (LaVonne) Hornberger all of Berthold, Marlene (Ralph) Brown of Ray and Lynell (Galen) Larson of Ryder; grandchildren: Rance, Kyle, Royce, Amanda, Jody, Lonnie, Wendy, Chad, Vonda, Tina, Travis, Wade, Jana, Breann, Mindi, Marty, Jaycie, Jade, Seth, Shea; great grandchildren Natalya, Gia, Rhiannon, Laycie, Cole, Jordyn, Clay, Mason, Kayden, Arianne, Taya, Grant, Madison, Sydney, Bethany, Cassidy, Jericho, Kennedy, Bailey, Hannah, Clancy, Kara, Colby, Emma, Delaney, Molly, Owen, McKenzi, Dalton, Dawson, Kutter, Kash, Brenna; great great grandchildren: Varik, Lynden; step great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters: Rachel Sandberg and Marie Folkvord.

Funeral Service: Wednesday,May 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Berthold Baptist Church.
Interment will follow in Wildrose Cemetery - rural Berthold.
Visitation: Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Berthold Baptist Church.
