Obituary

Elizabeth 'Betty' May , 93, Minot, died Tuesday, April 10, 2018 in a Minot nursing home.

Elizabeth was born November 3, 1924 in Rochester, NY to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Wagner) Born. She grew up in the community of Hilton, NY, where she received her education. Betty graduated from Hilton High School in 1942.

In the spring of 1942, she began a job at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY, where she worked for nearly five years as a lens technician. During this time, Betty began to correspond with her cousin, Marty, who was stationed overseas in the Army. She also began to exchange letters with his friend, Lynn May, who was also serving overseas. She and Lynn were married on February 23, 1946 in Rochester, New York. They moved to Mohall, ND in 1946 and made their home on the May family farm in Clay Township of Renville County, where they raised their seven daughters. After thirty-three years on the farm, they retired in 1979 and moved into Minot. They became residents of the Minot Edgewood Vista Community in 2006. After sixty-six years of marriage Lynn passed away on December 28, 2012.

Betty was a member of the Mohall Methodist Church, serving as a youth leader and also with the ladies aid of the church. She was also a member of the Clay Center Homemaker's Club.

Betty enjoyed knitting, always had time to read and was an accomplished accordion player. She was also an avid bowler and had received many trophy pins for her high scores. Betty was an excellent storyteller and loved to share memories and stories with family and friends. She was the last living member of her generation of the May family. Betty will be deeply missed by all who shared in her life.

Betty is survived by : her daughters, Nancy (James) Buttke, Sierra Vista, AZ, Barb (Gordon) Besse, Devils Lake, ND, Mary Carter, Mandan, ND, Kathy Koenig, West Fargo, ND, Patricia Hrichena and Priscilla May, both of Minot, ND; son-in-law, Steve Hallingstad, Hot Springs, SD; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Carol Hallingstad and son in law, Dennis Carter.

Celebration of Life Service : Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in Bethel Free Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Friday, April 27th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Salvation Army.
