Elizabeth Gwendolyn "Betty" Jung Eman , 89, Minot and formerly of the Surrey/Norwich area, died on Monday, June 2, 2014, at Quiet Oaks Hospice House, in St. Augusta, MN.
Betty was born on August 15, 1924 in Minot to Wallace and Alice (Kelly) Garrett. She was reared on a farm near Minot and attended rural schools, Roosevelt Elementary School, Minot Junior & Senior High School. Betty graduated from Minot High School in 1942, where she enjoyed playing violin in the orchestra, served on the school paper staff, belonged to Pep Club & Girl's Council, and played basketball & volleyball. As a young adult she was employed at Minot Steam Laundry, at Twin City Ordnance Plant Federal Cartridge Corporation in New Brighton, MN, making bullets for World War II, and at First National Bank in Minot.
Betty married Cletus Jung on April 7, 1947 in Minot. They made their home on the Bill & Stella Schaefer farm near Minot, prior to moving to a farm near Norwich in Surrey Township of Ward County in 1950. Cletus and Betty raised small grains, cattle, pigs and chickens. 1958 was a special year, when the farm house was remodeled to include running water and indoor plumbing! Cletus died on February 14, 1969. Betty remained on the farm with her children. On October 7, 1971, Betty married Emil Eman in Minot. Emil and Betty built a new home in 1974, less than one mile from the farm. Emil died on May 23, 2001. Betty moved to Dakota Terrace Apartments in Minot in August 2001, where she made many wonderful friends and enjoyed the apartment complex social gatherings. When Betty faced declining health in August 2013, she moved to Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, MN.
Betty was a lifelong member of St. Leo's Catholic Church where she was baptized, received her first communion, confirmed, and married. She was active in the Surrey School P.T.A., Surrey Music Boosters, and Ward County Farmers Union as a youth group leader. Betty loved bowling and Disneyland! She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting and sewing. Betty and Emil enjoyed traveling to visit relatives and to attend functions of her children and grandchildren. For many years she helped senior citizens with their income taxes. Betty also volunteered with March of Dimes, Woman's Action Program, and Ward Country Historical Society.
Betty's loving family includes her children: Janie Jung of Rolette, Joyce (Ron) Solberg of rural Minot, Bryce Jung of Whitehouse, Ohio, Donna (Terry) Medler of Waite Park MN, Meredith Jung of California, Neil Jung of Warm Springs, MT, Dolores Pilch of Bismarck, MaryAnn (Brad) Taft of Baltimore MD and Anita Jung Reich of Glenwood, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Linda Jung; many dear grandchildren, cherished great grandchildren; stepdaughters: Dorothy (Melvin) Christiansen, Darleen Klemp, and Loretta Kunkel; 11 step grandchildren; 14 step great grandchildren; 2 step great great grandchildren; sister Billyann Wessling of Oregon and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son Gary Jung, and sisters: Mary Agnes Balcom, Patricia Withers and Jayne Reeves.
Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, June 23, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot.
Visitation will be held Sunday, June 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Vigil Prayer Service, Recitation of the Rosary & Family Sharing will be Sunday, June 22, at 4:00 p.m. in St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot.
Interment: Tuesday, June 24, at 9:30 a.m. at the Jung Farm.
