Edwin E. Schmeichel, 87, Garrison, formerly of Minot and Douglas, died Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Garrison Memorial Hospital.
Edwin was born December 27, 1923 on the family farm near Douglas, ND, the son of Edward and Pauline (Wagnett) Schmeichel. He was raised on the family farm and attended country school near Douglas. He assisted with the operation of the farm during his younger years, until he was united in marriage to Mildred Dahl on October 2, 1944.
They made their home on a farm in Rosemount Township of McLean County from 1944 until 1981, when they retired and moved into Minot. He worked for six years at the Minot Public Library as a maintenance manager. Mildred died January 21, 2005. Edwin returned to Garrison to live in 2006.
Edwin was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Garrison until he and Mildred moved into Minot. They then became members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Minot, where he served the Church as an elder and trustee. He was also a member of LLL (Lutheran Layman's League) and enjoyed camping and reading.
His loving family includes , daughter, Linda (Jack) Basler, Acworth, GA and son, Steve (Joyce) Schmeichel, Kuna, ID; grandchildren, Vicki (William) Booth, Sharon (Michael) Lydick, Michael Allen Schmeichel & Douglas Dakota Schmeichel; great-grandchildren, Trenton, Trevor & Breanna Booth, Brandon, Megan & Kaitlyn Lydick; along with several nieces and nephews.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 60 years, Mildred, infant sons, Dennis Dean and Mark Allen Schmeichel; brothers, Gust, Clarence, Harvey & Leo Schmiechel and a sister, Bertha Neuhalfen.
Funeral service
: Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment:
Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation:
Friday from 2:00-7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to St Paul's Lutheran Church, Minot, Peace Lutheran Church, Garrison or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
