Ed Kuhn 91, Minot and longtime Minot City Council Alderman, died Wednesday, May 20, 2020 in a Minot assisted living facility.
Edward Richard Kuhn was born on March 27, 1929 in Fargo to John and Johanna (Leibham) Kuhn. He was raised and educated in the Towner/Berwick area and for three years in Milwaukee, WI. He moved to Minot when he was sixteen years old and was employed by Greengard Cranston Clothier's and as a bellman at the Clarence Parker Hotel. Ed enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 1, 1950 and served for 23 months (9 months overseas in the Korean War). He received his honorable discharge on July 19, 1952 at Camp McCoy, WI. He attained the rank of Sergeant First Class, served as a tank commander and received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
Ed was united in marriage to Norma Nilson on August 16, 1955 at St. Leo's Catholic Church - Minot. They made their home in Minot where he was employed by the Great Northern/Burlington Northern Railroad for 39 years as a Switchman, Retarder Operator, and for the last 11 years as Yardmaster at Gavin Yard. He retired in 1991. Norma died on November 17, 2013. Ed had continued to reside in Minot most recently at Edgewood Vista.
As a teenager Ed was a Golden Gloves amateur boxer locally, state wide and in the Army Special Services while he was stateside.
Long active in political circles, Ed served on the Minot City Council for 28 years and during that time he served as Council President and Chairman of Public Works and Finance Committees. Also, he was very active in the Democratic-NPL Party since 1960. He was an alternate-delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1972 and was a delegate to Democratic-NPL state conventions for many years. He was a member of the District #3 Democratic-NPL organization and a long-time member of the Century Club.
Ed was a member of the United Transportation Union, served as alternate State Director and local Legislative Representative and served the local organization as its Secretary-Treasurer and President. He was appointed by Governor Link to serve as Chairman of the Governor's Area Manpower Board (CETA) and was a local Legislative Representative of NARVE.
Ed was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, life-time member of the Railroad Museum Association and former member of Eagles, AARP, VFW and American Legion.
Ed especially enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, having a beer with friends or a cup of coffee with the Edgewood Bistro Coffee Crew. Also, he enjoyed woodworking until his eyesight failed, was well known for following through on the requests of constituents and was a huge advocate for the establishment and maintenance of the All Seasons Arena and Rainbow Gardens. But Ed's number one passion was his wife, daughters and their families and his pets.
Ed's loving family includes his daughters: Connie (Ron) Lowman and Rebecca (Mark) Post; grandchildren: Melissa Assels, Aaron Assels and Nick Post (Katie Fritz) and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Adam Kuhn and sisters: Helen Hauck and Kathryn Froeber.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Cookie's Cottage of Edgewood Vista and Caring Edge Hospice for their excellent care and kindness.
A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church - Minot. A livestream of the service may be viewed starting on May 27, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. It can be accessed by using https://www.mtmsales.net/thomas
