DuWayne Bostow, 66, Max, died Wednesday, January 3, 2007, in his home.
DuWayne John Bostow was born in Max, North Dakota on September 12, 1940 to John E. and Emma (Honcharoff) Bostow. DuWayne attended grade school and high school in Max, graduating from high school in 1958. Immediately after high school he enlisted in the Army, and was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. He enjoyed working with the air defense missile systems, and roaming the surrounding desert, becoming a true "desert rat."
After his discharge DuWayne gained an associate degree as an electronic technician from the North Dakota School of Science at Wahpeton. He returned to his beloved "desert rat" life by coming back to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He hired on at EG&G, and was an equipment technician on a RC-135 reconnaissance and research aircraft. This assignment carried him to many parts of the world, satisfying his love of travel and adventure.
Eventually DuWayne tired of the wandering life, and the project wound down. As often happens in these situations, a beautiful woman entered DuWayne's life. Eileen Marie Hartman and DuWayne were married December 14, 1968 in Rapid City, South Dakota. A son, Preston John Bostow, was born to DuWayne and Eileen on July 14, 1973 in Albuquerque, NM.
The adventurous couple moved to Fairbanks, Alaska. DuWayne worked at the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute as a camera technician and payload engineer. He became the "go to guy" for supporting various research projects, including many for Japanese scientists. DuWayane was famous for making something out of nothing. DuWayne's favorite projects were firing rockets into the ionosphere some forty to one hundred miles aloft, then exploding the payload of various chemicals, thus lighting up the night sky. These spectacular displays were visible for thousands of miles.
DuWayne and Eileen divorced in 1996. DuWayne retired to Max, and enjoying gardening, bee raising, attending gun shows, and maintaining his many friendships via ham radio and the internet. DuWayne loved animals, and had dogs, cats, including Preston's ferret, in Fairbanks. The stray cats in Max knew DuWayne as a soft handout, and he had a constant retinue outside his back door.
Surviving family includes: Son, Preston (Shu Wen) Bostow; Niece, Crystal Lei (John) Priddy, Roanoke, VA; Nephew: Sterling Jon Sahaydak; Sister: Delight (Edwin) Sahaydak, Ashland, VA; Great Niece and Nephews: Grace, Raleigh, Leo and Luke, his former wife Eileen, numerous cousins, and countless friends
