Obituary

Douglas Bergan, 72, Minot, died Saturday, February 2, 2019, in his home.

Doug was born January 21, 1947 in Rugby, ND to James and Dolores (Baukol) Bergan.  He grew up in Rugby and graduated from Rugby High School in 1965.

Doug enlisted into the US Army on January 31, 1968.  He served honorably in Vietnam and was transferred to the Army National Guard Reserves on October 21, 1970, completing his reserve duties in 1974.

Doug married the love of his life Patsy Finsaas in 1972 at Christian Missionary Alliance in Sidney, MT.  Their first home was in the wooden barracks at Minot State University, while Doug attended college.  He graduated with a double major in Education and Speech Pathology.

Doug worked as a fifth-grade teacher in Michigan, ND until moving to Gonvick, MN, where he served as an Elementary Principal for the school district.  Doug moved back to Rugby in 1979 and began his second career in the grocery business.  In 1986, he took a job with Nash Finch in Minot working until his retirement in 1996.

Doug earned an Eagle Scout designation in his youth and was very active in sports activities.  He carried his love of the outdoors his entire life.  Fishing, taking care of the yard and most importantly camping were a few of his favorite things.  For the past 8 years, Doug and Patsy made their claim to spot #87 at the Downstream Campground.  Doug loved his family and treasured every moment spent supporting their activities.  Doug was an avid NDSU fan and was always in 'Horns Up' mode while watching them dominate the FCS.  He will be deeply missed by all who shared in his life.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Patsy Bergan, Minot; children, Renee (fiancé Mark Sundgren) Swenson and their children, Brynn, Brady & Grant Swenson and Lauren, Madelyn and Ty Sundgren of Apple Valley, MN; Jamie (Amy) Bergan and their daughter, Gracyn of Minot, ND and Aaron (Jessica) Bergan and their daughter, Greta of Burlington, ND; sister, Vicki (Larry) Wurgler of Fargo, ND and a brother, Dan (Connie) Bergan of Jamestown along with numerous nieces and nephews.
