Doroles Mary Sullivan Haaland , 92, Minot, died on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, in a nursing care facility in Minot, holding the hand of her first-born daughter.
Doroles was born on November 2, 1923 in Mayland Township of Ward County near Carpio, ND to Martin and Barbara (Watne) Sullivan, the first of three daughters. She was reared on the family farm near Carpio and in Kenmare and she attended school in Carpio and Kenmare. She graduated from Carpio High School in 1940 Summa Cum Laude, attended Minot State Teacher's College, and graduated from the Trinity School of Nursing in 1945, fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a registered nurse.
Doroles married Olaf Haaland on October 25, 1945 in Carpio. They made their home in Minot where she was employed as a nurse at Trinity Hospital as well as at Northwest Clinic. During her time at Trinity, Doroles served as night supervisor in the Pediatrics Department, Emergency Room, and the Med/Surgical floor. When her husband was elected Ward County Sheriff in 1956, her new role was deputized matron of the Ward County Jail. For six consecutive terms (22 years) she cooked and served 3 meals a day to the inmates. After retirement from public service, Doroles and Olaf moved to Salem, OR, where in 1979 at the age of 56, she resumed her nursing profession. Doroles returned to Minot in October 2002, where she lived for the remainder of her life.
Doroles was a life-long student of the Bible and a fearless disciple for Christ. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Minot and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Salem. She served on both church councils. She was a member of the Mouse River District Nurses, North Dakota Peace Officers Association, Sons of Norway, and served on the ND Board of Nursing. She was involved in community through PTA, Girl Scouts, Operation Prognosis, AFS (Foreign Exchange Student Program) Kurdish Refugee Resettlement and countless other endeavors. In her free time she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and crossword puzzles.
Doroles had an abundance of curiosity and a beautiful mind.
Doroles is survived by three of her four children, Jane (Craig) Nelson, Minot, Julie (Ron) Johnson, San Diego, CA, and Joan (Paul) Paddock, McMinnville, OR; her only daughter-in-law, Lynnette Haaland, Minot; grandchildren, Keri (Shaun) Sipma, Cory (Danielle) Nelson, Sedona (James) Reynolds, Dakota Johnson, Blair (Jaime) Haaland, Brian (Heather) Haaland, Kristy (Joel) Stugelmeyer, John Martin and Helen Paddock; nineteen great-grandchildren, and her sister, Helen Haaland. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Doroles was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers-in-law, Martin Haaland and Girdell Patterson, sister, Fern Patterson and son, John Olaf Haaland.
Celebration of the Life of Doroles Haaland: Monday, December 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church - Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.
Visitation: Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund or Trinity Hospital Foundation.
