Doris Genevieve Smith, 93, Minot died on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 in a Minot nursing home.

Doris was born on May 23, 1921 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Minot to Ernest R. and Tilda (Mostad) Smith. She was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Minot on September 9, 1921, reared on a farm in the South Prairie area of Ward County, and attended Freedom Township School #2 prior to graduating from Minot High School in 1939. She continued her education at Minot Business College where she received specialized training in secretarial studies before graduating from the Minot Business Institute.

As a young adult, she was employed from 1942-1950 by the North Dakota Farmers Union and its affiliated cooperatives doing general office work. In 1950, she transitioned to the Farmers Union national office in Denver as an education fieldworker. Her tasks included membership outreach and organizing local activities such as conferences and youth summer camps. She travelled extensively in Utah, Idaho, and Washington, with occasional assignments in Colorado, Nevada, Texas, and Oklahoma.

Doris moved to Washington, D.C. in 1956 where she began a twenty-year career as an administrative business manager in various offices. She worked in public relations for the Democratic National Committee during the 1956 Presidential Campaign and attended the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. During this period she served in the offices of several elected officials including U.S. Representatives Edith Green (D-OR) and Henry Gonzales (D-TX), and U.S. Senators Quentin Burdick (D-ND) and Philip Hart (D-MI). Doris also worked for Congressional committees and Federal government organizations. She was self-employed as a consultant for the last eight years of her career. Doris retired on September 30, 1984, but stayed in Washington D.C. until 2009 when she moved to Minot. Most recently, she had been residing at Trinity Homes.
