Doris Adele Slaaten, 100, longtime educator, died Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Trinity Hospital in Minot, ND due to the COVID-19 virus.
Doris was born October 5, 1920 at Charlson, North Dakota, the daughter of Alfred and Maude (Dukette) Slaaten. She was raised and educated at Charlson and graduated from Sanish High School in 1938. She continued her education at Minot State College, where she received a standard teaching certificate and later a Bachelor of Science Degree in education in 1949. She received a Masters Degree from Northwestern University in Illinois in 1957 and later her Doctorate Degree from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO in 1975.
Doris began her teaching career at Portal and Sanish, ND, Sidney, Superior and Havre, Montana, before beginning her teaching career in the Division of Business at Minot State University for several years until retiring in 1984.
Doris was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church, Minot, where she had served as the first woman to be elected to the Church council and had since served on various committees. She was very active with the Church women's circle and taught Sunday School and served as chairperson for the New Organ fund drive. She was also active with Metigoshe Ministries, Scandinavian Heritage Association, Hostfest, a member of SCORE, and active on the MSU Board of Development Foundation for several years. She was an original member of the MSU Board of Regents and had received her title of Professor Emeritus at Minot State University for the College of Business in 1984. She had been a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, Girl Scouts, Mid Dakota Chapter of the American Red Cross, YWCA Board of Directors and had received the "Woman of Distinction Award in 1993 from the YMCA. She had also served on the MSU Alumni Association's Board of Directors, was a life member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, member of the National Education Association and the MSU Old Main Society - a designation for her many years as a donor to the University.
Doris enjoyed knitting, reading, and traveling. She had received numerous awards and honors throughout the years for her service in education and to the Minot Community.
She will forever be loved and missed by her niece, Nancy Adele, Green Valley, AZ. Great nieces, Gretta (Jeremy) Simonson, Molly Malchert, Tara (Matt) Klungtvedt. Great nephews, Greg (Heather) Cowan and Michael Cowan. Great Great nieces and nephews, Brita Cowan, Paige Cowan, Andrew Cowan, Walter Simonson, Lydia Simonson, Levi Klungtvedt and Adelaide Klungtvedt. Also Sheryl's husband, Rick Cowan and special lifelong friend, Adelaide Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Ralph Slaaten, sister-in-law, Alice Slaaten and niece Sheryl Cowan.
Private Celebration of Life service:
Due to COVID Concerns, the family has elected to have a private service for Doris on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot.

Thursday, October 22 at 3:00 p.m. in Good Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Keene, ND.
Public Visitation:
Wednesday, October 21st from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. Social distancing is requested and wearing of masks is preferred.
